I’m just quite disappointed at where the show is going.
The first two seasons were so exciting, and now I feel like I’m watching just to watch and say I finished it…

Being a Henry VIII buff, I’m having a hard time with a sexy good looking King. He’s supposed to be obese at this time! Granted, it’s nice to see the good looking King.

Loved the finale and can’t wait until next season! It just felt too short and I wanted more!

I loved the finale…with the exception that I DID NOT want it to end!! The beheading of Ann last year was a lot better…I watched it over and over again…but her speech was hard to top! I can’t wait until we get to Elizabeth’s era myself…I hope it goes on and on for years!!!

The writers have alot of historical material to cover, I just dont see why they just didn’t get down and dirty with some historical facts. It may not be as sexy and seductive as they want, and they have taken such licenses already. I am sure they could have pulled so much better a rabbit out of the peverbial hat ,so to speak.
I do believe more could have been focused on the relationship of Jane Seymor, and not just be cause she is my favorite queen in history, not in the show. I think they focused alot on anne and katherine in the first and second season which was great you got to really flesh out the characters. I just don’t see than in season three.
I know that historically Jane Seymour and Anne of cleves focused on Mary’s and Elizabeth’s education, this was also picked up by Catherine Parr. Katherine Howard was more a plaything historically not much was said of her relationship with the princesses.
Really, all the queens were manipulated by their families for station in the tudor society. It was sad that women were such tools historically. Though they found ways of being intelligent and infulential in thier own right.

Though the characters look fanastic and the costuming is alluring. No hats! No proper undergarments! In the 1500’s bare heads of hair were only appropriate for maidens on their wedding day. For the sake of modesty, the french and gabled hoods were all the fashion. The costume department had fun with the hats in season 1 and 2, which i can take artistic license, but not gabled hoods? This hat was iconic of the changing for Katherine of Aragon wearing the english and spanish styles to Anne Bolyen to french hood all the way. When Jane Seymour was queen the hood switched to the gabled hood was more popular than ever. The gabled hood was really only worn exclusively and the longest in England. There are some variations in flanders but the height of popularity was in england. This was such a debacle in my book.
I can take artistic license on some historical facts and costuming, but there is very little right with the time period correctness of the costumes, most are out of place by 50 to 80 years. The mens outfits are pretty good, thought they are out of place also by 50 years. We see lots of elizabthan styles and a few tudor outfits. When we do see them they are thrown on servants here and there.

I guess one has to remeber this is historical fiction, This interpritation is sexy and seductive but I consider it now in the realms of fantasty.

I agree. I want more and felt somewhat disappointed. The first two seasons were extremely thrilling. What is happening?

What was the big finale? What happened that left me wanting the next season to come? Nothing was left for us to want to see what happened next.

I love the series but thought the finale was a bit “rushed,” somehow. Cromwell, despite his faults, was always faithful to the King and his downfall was fast and quite unsubstantiated. That said, I am reading Alison Weir’s “Henry VIII” and it seems that Cromwell had many enemies and they were able to somehow convince an impressionable Henry that he was a traitor. Henry – what a character! And I”m overlooking that JR-D is not obese – it’s the soul of the character that he is portraying so well.

Alison Weir does a wonderful job of brining the life stories of Henry and his posse to life. Love her!

Alison Weir is my new favorite author. I have read many books on the Tudors and the Renaissance time period. She is the only one to really make it seem like a story.

I also felt Cromwells’ downfall was too fast….it was rushed. And I am trying to figure out why they made Katheryn Howard so ditzy! …..and did I see the show right? They got her out of a brothel? I really wish the show would follow history just a tad better. I LOVED Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn….thought the second season was much better. I actually fell asleep a couple of times during the third season, I hate to admit, and had to watch a few episodes again to catch up.

      • Posted June 11, 2009 at 11:11 pm | Permalink

Well… they didn’t get Katherine Howard out of a brothel – more of a weird 16th century orphanage… but the Dowager Duchess’s home was famous for it’s loose rules and the girls often had boys in their beds. (that was actually historically accurate)
It’s debated by historians, but some say Katherine was illiterate and she certainly being dumped off at the Duchess’s house for an indifferent upbringing didn’t help.

I think it’s silly to say a brothel. It is important to know she was Anne Boleyn’s cousin! She live with many kids who were bastard of important people. And they had the same fate! She was also very clever. Just not in politics or the kings court. She was clever with men and getting what she wanted. She could also read a little… but that was very little.

Perhaps Joss Stone wasn’t the best choice for the so called ‘Flanders Mare” Anne of Cleves… she looked much prettier than the actress playing Kathryn Howard. Even though they tried to mute Stone’s look…she is naturally pretty. Bad choice.

    • Posted June 8, 2009 at 4:52 am | Permalink

I totally agree with you…..There was nothing ugly about Joss Stone and Catherine Howard…..rather plain but I also think they made the mistake of making her way too childish. I know she was young but, look at her real picture of her in Alison Weir’s book. I was disappointed with this season.

    • Casey
      Posted June 24, 2009 at 6:09 pm | Permalink

But I think Joss Stone also was looking at the type of character she wanted to play. In history Anne of Cleves was done wrong yet a great person. Kitty Howard was.. well.. not.

JRM never disappoints in his acting, however the season was way too short and the story lines were medicore.
I am hoping that next season will be bigger and better.

I love the show, however I too am disappointed regarding how short it is. I mean, there’s so much that they can play and yet they are rushing it. All that’s left is Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr and then his death next season. They could have lengthen the time with Queen Jane OR actually show a longer time with Anne of Cleves instead of 2 episodes at the most. *sigh* season 1 and 2 are the best this one lacked.

I agree that this last season was not as good as the prior seasons. The reason for this is the extreme wait time between the new season! They take a year off and expect to keep me interested!

The first season you get to know him, the second season – It all about the infamous Boleyn, the third season we needed to know more about the start of his madness and demise, so it seemed less Sexy and interesting. But we needed to know why things change from being DESIRABLE & HAPPY king to a ruthless, unforgiving & miserable king. The final season….will be the beginning of the end and I don’t want to see JRM as a obese, disgusting King. I want to see how he Realm ends.

  16. Posted June 11, 2009 at 4:30 am | Permalink

I was fairly disappointed with this past season also. I’ve studied a lot about the Tudors and by the time Henry meets Katherine Howard and she agrees to marry him (who she has only seen a picture of him when he was young) she was disgusted by him because he was so fat and also he did stink because of his wound. I know that directors take somewhat of an artistic license, but with all of the special effects out there now, they could have made him look more life like. I hope the fourth season is a little more believable.

I agree, don’t even remember the ending enough to recall what they did with Cromwell. Too short a season and not near as much action. I can live with the “artistic allowances” but need more content than this year

HUGE MISTAKE casting that very homely girl to play Katherine Howard!!!!! are you kidding me, was it a joke, that girl should of been cast a maid in the background who is about 13 maybe. Ugh! very unattractive to say the least and absolutely NO chemistry with henry! I love jrm but i am so so so so sad about the choice of all the women on the 3rd season, what a let down!!! PLEASE RE CAST katherine Howard PLEASE !!!!!!!! Couldnt stand to look at her, she isnt even pretty at all, did they bother to screen test her for this part, the last scene on horseback was her absolute worst. ugh!!!!

I love the tudors, but i absolutely miss the fire between Henry and boelyn!!!! Couldnt the show have been clever enough to bring her back for some hauntings or nightmares (Like the illusions henry had when he was battling the black plague) All the women cast for season three were wrong!!! The only one i do like is Anne of cleves and little elizabeth, the rest of the women should all be RE CAST ASAP!! Come on Tudors, you’ve cast some interesting ppl for the first two seasons, why such a let down on the third, Absolutely love jrm, bring on some beautiful actresses that could have even an inch of the chemistry that Boelyn had with him. Time for new CASTING PPL!!!!

The girl who is playing Kathryn Howard is such a hurge mistake, she isnt pretty at all, no chemistry with henry at all and she could maybe be a 13 yr old maid in the background, but i couldnt even look at her on that last scene on horseback, very homely not what Kathryn Howard should of been!!! Did the show get new casting people because all the women on season 3 were a let down, except anne of cleves and little elizabeth, the rest were all boring.

Ok – So I am a bit late in the Tudors hype but finally rented all 3 seasons and am currently obsessed with the show.. its become quite distracting 🙂 Overall, I must agree with most of the comments made on this blog – seasons 1 & 2 are definitly the best – JRM does an amazing job as Henry, He & Natalie Dormer had such genuine chemistry and passion almost to a fault. I found myself missing their union in season 3. This season was quite depressing and sad as you watch Henry becoming somewhat “undone” .. Season finale was bland and moderatley exciting .. Still – I cannot WAIT for SEASON 4 .. WHEN IS IT HAPPENING??
